Small lotus and swirl tattoo on the lower abdomen

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small black lotus flower sits above a single curling swirl line on bare skin at the lower abdomen. The linework is thin and even, with simple outlines and no shading, and the ink is solid black. The composition is a tight close-up with a dark top and a hand with light blue nails at the edge of the frame.

Something was caught in the reeds. It was a brass bowl, green at the rim, with a single curl scratched inside it like the tail of a wave. Her grandmother had called it the calling bowl. Whoever struck it had to hold it steady over water and draw the rim slowly, and the note would travel down to the lotus roots under the silt, which were said to remember every hand that had ever planted them.

She had never tried it. She knelt on the planks, wiped the bowl on her apron, and set her palm across its lip. The swirl sat under her thumb, cold and precise, and she thought of the small flower her daughter had drawn in the margins of the parish ledger that summer, one petal at a time, its stem curling off to one side as if it were listening.

The pond went still. Then, slowly, a pale bloom lifted through the brown water, open and perfectly white, and nobody in the village ever agreed on whether it had been there before.
