Lotus outline on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind shows a lotus flower tattoo on the upper back, close to the shoulder blade. The design is drawn in a single thin dark outline with no shading, and the petals are layered to suggest a full bloom. The ink is a single dark tone against pale skin, and the plain outdoor background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Mr Pryce swore the thing would drown by Michaelmas. He had found it in the rock pool below the north wall after the equinox gale, a single pale bud wedged among the bladderwrack, and he had carried it up the rock in his cupped hands like a bird with a broken wing. Now it sat in a tin bath on the landing, where the lamp's sweep passed over it every twenty seconds, and I was the one who had to top up its water from the rainwater barrel.

It did not drown. By the first week of August it had put up leaves as wide as saucers, and by the third it had built itself a crown of petals, one layer tucked inside the next, each row a little higher than the one below. Mr Pryce would not go near it. He counted the sweeps of the light instead and muttered that a flower had no business opening in a place where nothing else was allowed to rest. He had not slept properly since his wife went across to the mainland for the cure.

On the night the fog came in thick enough to hide the gallery rail, the bloom opened all the way. I heard him shuffle out onto the landing in his slippers, and I found him on his knees beside the bath, his lamp forgotten on the floor, his face as wet as the rock. 'Mud,' he said, to nobody. 'Every bit of it grows out of mud.' Then he laughed, the first time I had heard it in a year, and went down to fetch the ledger so he could write the bearing for the morning boat.
