Art nouveau woman with flowing hair in oval frame
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black linework drawing of a woman in a flowing gown, with flowers in her hair and long hair curling down past an oval frame edged with beads. The lines are clean and even, with stylised drapery and a sinuous, decorative outline typical of art nouveau design. The image is monochrome on a plain white background and shows only the design, with no skin or body visible.

The mirror came off the back of a salt lorry outside Sayer's Well, and nobody on the road wanted it, so Maud Teague hung it on the fence post by her tyre shed and let the dust have its way with it. The frame was oval and ringed with small iron beads, and the glass had gone the colour of weak tea. Travellers stopped to check their hats in it. Most drove on without looking twice.

The woman in the glass wore a gown the colour of wet sand, and flowers pinned in her hair that never wilted. Her hair ran down past the frame and out across the gravel, long as a river that had lost its way. Maud said it was only the old silvering. Her grandson, who drove the water tanker, said he had seen the hair move on days when no wind blew.
One August a surveyor came through with a dead radio and a bad temper. He laughed at the mirror, then leaned close to straighten his collar, and the woman in the glass lifted her head and looked at him the way a sister looks at a fool. He drove off without his hat. Maud found it on the fence post, full of sand, and set it in the frame for safe keeping.
The hat is still there. The tanker drivers say it brings luck, and the bend past Maud's gate has not claimed a car in years. Maud says it is only a mirror, and the woman in it has more sense than to correct her.
