Sewing tools and roses tattoo design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a tape measure wrapped around a central spool of thread, with a needle threaded through it and a second tape measure at the bottom. Roses with layered petals and leaves fill the gaps between the sewing tools. It is rendered in clean black outlines with no shading or colour, and the elements are arranged in a vertical column.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hem was out by a quarter inch, and Nell Garside knew it before she had the tape round the bodice. Forty years of hemming had taught her hands to move faster than her eyes. She kept the tape looped over her wrist, its numbers worn pale at twenty-four and twenty-five, and her spool of ivory silk sat in the tin on the sewing table where it had sat since her mother's day. The wedding was at eleven. The bell at St Oswald's would ring whether the dress was ready or not.

Her apprentice, a lanky boy named Tobias Quayle who had only ever sewn buttons, came in with a cup of tea gone cold. He looked at the gown spread over the cutting board like a dust sheet over furniture and asked whether it could be saved. Nell didn't answer him. She threaded the needle on the first try, which she took as a sign, and bent over the lace roses at the hem, unpicking the one petal she had stitched crooked the night before.

By half past nine the hem sat true. Tobias held the train while she tacked the last inch, and neither of them spoke. Then she pushed the needle through the cloth one final time and left it there with its thread trailing, the way her mother always had, in case anything came loose on the day.

At eleven, Nell stood at the back of the church with her hands in her coat pockets, not quite listening to the vows. When the doors opened and the light came down the aisle, she counted the steps the way she always did, and the hem did not catch once.
