Shaded lotus flower on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A lotus flower with layered, open petals and a textured seed pod at its centre, with leaves spreading out below. The petals are rendered with smooth grey gradients and fine stippling, giving a soft three-dimensional look. The design is centred on a forearm against a pale, plain background, with a soft shadow beneath the flower.

The marquee smelled of cut grass and somebody's over-sweet perfume, and you had already lost the rings twice to the lining of your waistcoat. Uncle Desmond was shouting about the gravel and the cars across the lane, so you slipped out past the bunting and down through the orchard to the old mill pond, where the lilies Aunt Maud planted fifty years ago had gone wild in the brown water.

She used to say lotus seeds could wait in the mud for centuries and still open if the water came back. Grey, brittle things, like the pods in the glass dish on her windowsill, each one pocked with holes like a pepper pot. You knelt on a folded tablecloth, which was a mistake, and reached for the nearest stalk. It came away easily, and when you tipped it the seeds rattled like dried peas in your palm.

Behind you the string quartet began tuning, a wavering A that drifted over the reeds. You remembered being nine, Maud's spotted hands closing over yours in the mud. Don't yank, she'd said. Lift it like you're asking. You thought of that now, pressing one seed into the pocket where the rings had been hiding, then wiping your fingers on the grass.

When you climbed back up the lane the vows had already begun without you. Your sister turned at the sound of your shoes on the gravel and raised her eyebrows. You held out your hand and opened it. One seed sat in the middle of your palm, dull and unpromising, and she laughed so hard she had to hold on to the arm of the nearest chair.
