Peony tattoo on the thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large peony bloom with layered petals and two leaves fills the side of a thigh, drawn in fine black linework. The petals are built up with dense stippled dots and soft grey shading that gives them volume and depth. The flower sits centrally in the frame, with the black underwear hem visible at the top edge and bare skin around the design.

Mind the wasps, they've been at the windfalls since Lammas, and sit where I can see your faces. Right. Old Mrs Pask had a peony by her back door, the only thing on that whole farm that wasn't for eating or selling. Her husband had brought it from a nursery in Taunton the spring they married, and every June it opened so heavy the stems bent down to the gravel.

Then the summer the blight came through the orchard, she went out one morning and found the bloom half open, the petals curled at the edges and grey as ash, as if someone had breathed on them. She didn't cut it. She sat on the step with her tea going cold and counted the layers, one by one, the way you'd count coins you couldn't spend. Seven outer petals, nine inside, and a tight knot at the heart where the wind had never got in.

The orchard man came round with his sprayer and his long face, saying the whole row would have to go, and she told him to take the apples and leave the flower. He laughed. She didn't. So he left the peony standing among the rotten pears, and when the hard frost came it was the only thing in the garden that didn't drop.

Come on, finish your cider. What do you think she kept? Not the flower. The knot in the middle, pressed flat in her Bible, where it's still sitting now if you ask the vicar nicely.
