Black and grey realism rose with black lace-style linework across a shoulder and upper chest.

Shaded rose and lace ornament on shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A large, shaded rose sits on the top of the shoulder, with its petals rendered in soft grey gradients and deep black shadows. Surrounding it, dense black ornamental linework forms lace and paisley-like scrollwork that extends over the shoulder and towards the collarbone. The image is a close, slightly angled view with the tattoo filling most of the frame against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lace was due at the manor by Michaelmas, and by the first week of September Hester Wale had only finished half of the collar. Her bobbins clicked through the long evenings while the wood beyond the last cottage went dark earlier each day, and she did not look at it. Everyone in Coldharrow knew the old rule: you did not walk past the stile after the bell, and you did not pick the roses that grew in the hedge there, pale as washed linen and thorned like wire.

Her mother had been a lacemaker before her, and her mother's mother. They worked patterns of paisley swirls and ferns, and all of them, the story went, had kept one bobbin back for the forest. Hester found hers at the bottom of the dresser drawer, wound with thread the colour of woodsmoke. On the Thursday she needed one more inch of pattern, she took it to the stile and tied the end to the first thorn.

The wood paid for its thread in the quiet way woods do. Next morning the line had become a rose grown out of the lace itself: petals of tight grey knots, with shadow gathered deep at the heart where the work was finest. It was heavy in her palm and cold as dew. The collar was finished by evening, but the rose would not come off the bobbin when she tried to cut it free.

Her mother said nothing when she saw it. She only sat down, unpicked the last of the old scrollwork with her teeth, and wound the loose thread round her fingers. By morning the frost on the kitchen window had grown a rose in the exact shape of the collar, and the stile hedge was bare.
