Two roses with leaves on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two roses, one smaller and partly behind the larger, with several leaves extending to the left and right. The design is drawn in clean black outlines with no shading, so the petals and leaves are defined by line alone. The ink is black on skin, and the composition fills the shoulder area.

Dear Nell,

We pulled into Hexham on Tuesday with the waltzer still smelling of Mr Pollard's cigarettes, and by Thursday the whole field was mud to the axles. You'll want to hear about the roses, so I'll tell it straight. Old Dora Finch has run the tombola since before you were born, and she keeps two rose bushes in tins on the back step of her caravan, one big and one not much more than a sprig. Every morning she cuts the first bloom for whoever has been sweetest to her that day, and it has been nothing but grumbling since Easter.

Then the lad from the Ferris wheel, Tomasz, took the smaller bush off her steps without asking and carried it across the car park in the rain. Dora came out in her dressing gown swearing in two languages. He said he only wanted it to sit beside the big one, because the big one had looked lonely since the Dundee stop. I thought that was daft, and then I saw the pair of them on the bench by the generator with the rain dripping off the lean-to, and I didn't think it daft any more.

She didn't speak to him for three days. On the fourth morning there was a second bloom open on the big bush, pale at the edges, and the small one had gone over entirely. Tomasz swears it was the same plant, but I've seen those tins and I know which is which. Pack your good coat. We're at the coast by Saturday, and Dora says she wants you to see the roses before they drop.

Love, Maggie
