Black and grey realistic rose tattoo framed by black lace-style flourishes on a shoulder, with a wooden cabinet and chair in the background.

Realistic rose with lace flourishes on shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A large, shaded rose sits at the centre of the design, with its petals rendered in soft grey tones and fine highlights. Dense black linework forms lace-like scrolls and filigree that wrap around the rose on the top, sides and bottom. The image is taken at an angle, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against warm-toned skin.

Mother, the lace came back from Calais wrong again. The scallops on the Pemberton collar were pulled too tight, so the whole edge puckers like a frightened mouth, and Mrs Hale has sent it back with a note that says only the word unacceptable underlined twice. I have sat up with the bobbins until the candle guttered, unpicking and starting over, and still my fingers keep going to the rose instead of the pattern. You know the one I mean, the grey cabbage rose Father painted on the lid of his tobacco tin before the war, the one you said was too sad to hang in the parlour.

I worked the border of it into the cuff of the wedding gown for the Ashworth girl on Tuesday. Nobody saw it but me, tucked where the sleeve turns under. The lace goes around the bloom like a hedge round a grave, curling out at the corners into little ferns and wheels, and when I finished the last loop I sat back and felt that I had done something true for once, without anyone's approval.

So I am not coming home at Michaelmas. I have written to Mr Okonedo at the shop on Silver Street and he has promised me a bench by the window, where the light falls grey and even all afternoon. Tell Father I have kept the tin. Tell him the rose is holding up better than either of us.
