Shaded roses and black lace on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
Two shaded roses with leaves sit on the upper back, with a black lace pattern of swirls and mesh flowing out to the right. The roses use soft grey shading and fine detail on their petals, while the lace is solid black linework with a fine mesh fill. The image is a close view of bare skin in warm, even light, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The lace came in on a Tuesday, folded in tissue paper inside a biscuit tin, and the man who brought it wouldn't say whose it was. Nottingham at half eleven, the trams gone quiet, rain on the cobbles of the Lace Market. I laid it under the lamp in the back room of my mother's old workshop and found the mesh had been darned by someone with a steady hand and very little patience.

Every knot told me something about the woman who'd made it. Tight twists in the corners, a run of double stitches where she'd stopped to answer a child calling from the stairs. Her initials, R.C., were worked into one scallop, small enough to miss. The roses along the hem had been tatted separately and sewn on, each petal shaded with grey thread so they looked lit from one side, like something left out in the dusk.
I gave it three nights. I picked out the bad darning, reweaved the net with a fine needle, and hummed whatever hymn she must have hummed over her own work. On the fourth night the tin came back with a note, unsigned: Keep the roses. Burn the rest if you have to. I didn't understand until I held the pattern up to the window and saw the swirls ran like the Trent, the weir and the bridge and the mills that used to stand where the car park is now.
I kept the roses. I stitched them onto a strip of my own and hung it over the sink where the streetlight comes through. Some nights the mesh catches the light and throws a shadow like a wing across the tiles, and I think of that steady hand, still somewhere out in the dark, counting its knots.
