Rose made of sheet music on upper back
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
A large rose sits at the centre of the image, its petals drawn with staff lines, notes and clef-like marks in place of plain shading. The outlines are bold and dark, and the petals are shaded in blues and greys to give a rounded, three-dimensional look. Two leaves and fine scrolling swirls extend from the rose, set against smooth skin.

Mrs Ada Pell had copied music by hand for forty-one years, and her left wrist carried the ache to prove it. The orders came up the stairs of the Harrow Street shop in brown envelopes: a hymn for a Methodist anniversary, a waltz for a retirement dance, parts for a village band that could only afford one copy of the cornet line. She inked staves with a steel nib and a ruler she had owned since school, and she never let a clef wander.

On the Thursday the shop was due to close, a young man from the council brought a crate of unsold paper from the old music hall. Folded inside a discarded bass part, Ada found a full score of a song nobody remembered, its margins crowded with pencilled corrections in a hand she recognised as her late husband's. Frank had been a bad tenor and a worse proofreader, but he had always wanted to see a flower in the notes.
She spent the afternoon with the score spread across the counter. Where the bars ran out she began to draw petals, curling each staff round the next so the quavers fell into shadow and the minims sat like dew on the outer leaves. She used the grey wash they once kept for ledger corrections and, at the last, a blue she mixed from two bottles that had lived in the window too long.
When the young man came back for the crate, the rose was finished and drying on the counter. He studied it for a long moment, then asked what the song was called. Ada wiped her nib and said she had never heard it played, and that was rather the point.
