Black and grey rose on the neck
Realism · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a large rose with layered petals and a tightly curled centre, with dark leaves framing it along the side and back of the neck. Soft grey shading and fine highlights give the petals volume, while deep black areas define the leaves and shadows. Only black and grey ink is used, and the frame includes a gauged ear piercing and a gloved hand at the lower edge.

Mrs Ada Pell had been up since four, kneeling in the glasshouse at Hartley Lane with a cold cup of tea beside her, when the bloom finally opened on the plant her late husband had called the Ashgrove. Everyone else in the county ordered crimson and sulphur from the catalogue. Ada had only ever grown the grey one.

Its petals came in layers, the outer ones broad and slightly cupped, the inner ones folded so tightly over the centre that the heart of it looked like a knot of wet string. Her husband had sworn it was a sport of the old damask, though no nursery book listed it. The leaves were dark as lamp soot, and each one had to be wiped by hand every morning or it lost its gloss.
The inspector from the Horticultural Society came on the Tuesday with a box camera and a stiff collar. He photographed the bloom from three sides, asked whether she had dyed the soil, and wrote something down when she said no. "It will never sell," he told her kindly. "Nobody buys a rose they cannot name." Ada cut the bloom anyway and carried it up the lane wrapped in a damp cloth.
At the churchyard she laid it on her husband's grave, where the stone had gone green at the edges. The shadows of the petals fell across the lettering, and for a moment the whole thing looked like an engraving, something from a botanical plate, something a person might one day colour in. She left it there and did not look back to see whether the wind would take it.
