Shaded wing and script letter on a shoulder blade

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a wing with feather detail on the left, shaded from dark to light grey, joined to a black script letter that has a looped lower stroke. The wing uses soft gradient shading, while the lettering is solid black with a smooth, sharp edge. The design sits on bare skin across the upper back, with a black strap visible at the right edge of the frame and a soft pink flush around the ink.

The sign on the lead lorry had flaked for three winters before anyone let you touch it. Old Harriet Pike, who ran the Wonderland Travelling Fair from a caravan the colour of weak tea, handed you a sable brush the morning you turned sixteen and said the J on the big top was the only letter in the alphabet that had ever given her trouble. Its tail always wanted to fly off.

You spent that August on a stepladder over Dunmore Green, lettering the fair's name in gold leaf while the generators coughed and the candyfloss man sang to himself. Each evening you climbed down with paint under your nails and walked the midway, past the dodgems and the coconut shies, looking for Eli, the wing-walker who had lost two fingers to a tent-pole in 1979 and still flew a canvas wing off the top of the Octopus. He said the trick was to keep your weight on the letter, never on the feathers.

On the last night the wind came off the estuary hard enough to lift the tarpaulins. Harriet found you on the ladder, brush still wet, sketching a bird over the curl of your J. "Finish the letter first," she said, "then the wing will know where it's going." You did. By dawn the lorries were rolling south and the sign read WONDERLAND in gold with a jagged black J at its heart, and when the sun caught the wing you swore the feathers lifted, just slightly, as if the letter had been waiting all along to fly off.
