Four leaf clover on an upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A four leaf clover with heart shaped petals and a thin stem, drawn in black linework. The petal edges and parts of each leaf are filled with stippled dots, while the central veins are dashed lines, with a few small dots beside the top leaf. The tattoo sits on a pale arm against a grey fabric background, with a striped top and lace visible at the edge of the frame.

Brother Osric had spent all of Lent drawing the wrong flower. The abbot wanted a four-leaved clover in the margin of the psalter for the feast of Saint Botolph, and every attempt came out as three hearts and a hopeful stalk. On the Tuesday before Palm Sunday, with the bell for Sext already ringing over the fen, he set down his pen and went barefoot into the kitchen garden.

The clover grew by the south wall, where the sun lingered longest. He knelt among the nettles, turned over leaf after leaf with a fingertip, and found one with four. Its edges were pale and it had a dark speck at the base, like a spilt drop of ink. He cut it close with his thumbnail and carried it back in his cupped hands as though it might spill.

In the scriptorium he propped the sprig beside the vellum and worked with his finest nib. Where the ink had pooled in the upper petal, he lifted the pen and stippled the edges with tiny points instead, the way old masters shaded a cloak, so each heart looked as soft as wet wool. He ruled the veins in dashes, because a solid line seemed too proud for a weed that had come up unasked. Brother Anselm, copying the Litany two desks away, paused to watch and said nothing at all.

When the abbot turned the leaves at vespers, he stopped at the clover and leaned close. "Where did you find this?" Osric pointed through the window towards the wall. The abbot touched the small dots Osric had scattered beside the top leaf, then looked at the faint green stain the sprig had left on the desk, and smiled. "Leave it as it is," he said.
