Claddagh and shamrock on the back
Traditional · Back · Colour · Photo
A green outlined shamrock surrounds a Claddagh motif, with two hands holding an orange heart topped by a gold crown. The linework is bold and dark green, while the hands are softly shaded in grey and the heart has warm orange and gold tones. The design sits centrally on a close, slightly warm-toned crop of skin.

The hands come apart first. That is how Declan the goldsmith tells a true Claddagh from a shop copy, by whether the two hands can be parted without a fight. You are kneeling in the nettles below Carrigeen Castle with the ring in your palm, its silver wrists gone loose and the little heart still held between them, its crown bent over like a hat in the rain.

The stair fell in the winter of the big gales, and the bailey is sheep and sorrel now. A girl called Oonagh Cassidy found the ring in the rubble when she came up to count her ewes. She pressed it into your hand at the gate and said the gold was too good for the bin and you were the only jeweller in twenty miles who answered the phone on a Sunday. She did not say whose it was, and you did not ask.
Back at the bench in Clifden, the solder takes longer than you want. You file the joints clean, bring the hands together over a blue flame, and watch the metal take them like a handshake that remembers itself. Inside the band there is a date, 1931, and a fine line of letters too worn to read until you tilt the loupe towards the window. Then you cut two shamrock leaves into the back of the band, one for each hand, with a graver so thin it could thread a needle.
Oonagh comes for it on the Monday. She turns it over, finds the leaves with her thumb, and closes her fist around it without saying anything. The heart sits quiet in its hands, crown pointing up, and you think of all those castle wives who once wore the same promise, each one swearing the heart would stay put.
