Ship in a teacup with storm clouds and rose

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A painted design shows a sailing ship with billowing sails emerging from a teacup, with grey storm clouds, a lightning bolt and a sun with rays on the left. A large red rose sits to the right of the cup, and a small anchor hangs from the cup's handle. The linework is dark and defined, with soft brown wash and bright colour on the cup, rose and leaves, set against a warm orange-brown background inside a black mat.

Dear Tom,

The snow has shut the Fell Road since Tuesday, so there are nine of us in the Crown with nothing to do but wait for the ploughs and drink too much of Mrs Pargeter's tea. I've been pouring it from the green willow pot you always said looked like a pond. The cups are the good ones from the back shelf, the ones with the fish swimming under the glaze, and this morning one of the carters asked me why there was a ship sailing out of his cup. I told him it was the storm that had come up in the night, but that isn't true. Nothing in this house has been properly stormy since you left.

The sky over the yard went the colour of wet slate at four o'clock, and the lightning came down over the moor like someone cracking a whip. Then the sun broke through low and orange on the far side of the valley, just as the bell rang for supper. Mr Ashby said it was the sort of weather that makes sailors give up the sea. I thought of you, and I thought of the sea, which I have never seen, only the picture of it on your mother's wall.

I found the old brass anchor from your christening cup in the drawer under the bar, and I've tied it to the handle of the green cup so it swings when I lift it. It's silly. I have written to you every week for eleven years, and the post has been kind enough to bring me one reply.

Drink something hot, love. The ploughs will come when they come. I'll keep the kettle on and the green cup warm for when you walk through that door, storm or no storm.

Yours, Hannah
