Ship in storm within ornate banner design

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A detailed black ink drawing of a three-masted sailing ship battling rough, dark waves, framed by an ornamental panel. A lantern with small wings sits at the top, two scrolling banners carry the handwritten quote, and a compass with a skull at its centre hangs above a rosary. The linework uses fine hatching and stippling with no colour, and the layout is symmetrical and vertical.

Dear Mother, the glass in the stern windows cracked on the third night out from Valparaíso, and since then I have written every line of this by the light of a single lantern that rattles on its hook like a bad tooth. You will say I should have put in at the Falklands. You are right, and I told Mr Pell so, but he had a cargo of wool that would spoil and a wife in Bristol who would not forgive him a second winter at anchor, so we kept her under reefed topsails and let the sea have its say.

It had its say on Thursday. The swell came up out of the south black as ink, and the foremast went over the side with its sails still drawn, dragging a tangle of rope that tore at the hull all night like a dog at a sack. Pell stood by the wheel with his hat gone and his hair plastered flat, shouting numbers at the men, and I thought that I would never see the coast again, and that you would hear of it from some clerk in a grey office who could not spell the ship's name.

But the storm broke at dawn, the way they do, all at once. The water turned from slate to green, and the light came through the torn clouds in long bars that lit the spray like falling glass. Pell took off his remaining hat, looked at it, and laughed until he coughed. I have kept a scrap of the sail. It is folded in the back of my almanac, and when you come to Gravesend in the spring I will show you the place where the canvas burned blue at the edges.

There is so much beauty in a storm, Mother, and I did not see it until the storm was over. Tell Father the compass he gave me is still true north. I will be home before the blossom goes.
