Siempre Contigo script on two fingers

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest overlapping, and the phrase Siempre Contigo is written in cursive script along the fingers of each hand. The linework is fine and dark, with the letters sitting on the skin in a flowing, joined-up style. The photograph is black and white, with soft focus on the lettering and a plain pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The engine on the Ellen Mary had a cough only I could hear over the diesel, so when Aurelio walked up to the Hatton locks to ring his mother in Alicante, I stayed in the wheelhouse and listened for it. We had been married four years and afloat for three, creeping the length of the Grand Union with a ginger cat called Bishop and a stove that smoked whenever the wind came from the north.

He came back with rain on his cap and a paper bag of bread from the Co-op. His mother had asked again whether I would ever make rice without burning it, he said, and I told him she had been judging my paella down a crackling phone line for two years and had never once been wrong. He laughed, then held his hand up against the wheelhouse glass so the words on his fingers sat beside the wet window: Siempre contigo. We had them done in a parlour in Leamington the week we bought the boat, the same two fingers on each hand, so that when we held hands the letters met in the middle like the joined rails of a fence.

That evening we worked up through the locks at Stoke Bruerne with the water climbing under us. Each gate groaned shut and the boat rose slowly in the dark, and I stood on the back deck with the windlass and watched the lamp in the lock-keeper's cottage. Aurelio called down from the tiller that the cat had found the bread.

The lettering had been meant for a long way on water, I thought, and we had come a long way. Under the dripping canopy, with the bread gone and the stove finally drawing, I held my hand next to his and read the words back to myself, the way you check a lock is full before you open the gate.
