King and queen finger tattoos with crowns

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are shown with black script lettering reading King on one finger and Queen on another, each with a small crown tattooed on a neighbouring finger. The linework is solid and fairly bold, with simple black fill on the crowns and no shading. The photograph is monochrome against a tiled floor, with the hands filling most of the frame.

The snow had closed the Kessel pass by noon, and Aunt Marit's lamp was the only light for three miles. I was carrying salt and a sealed letter for the customs house on the far side, and I had no intention of sleeping in the hut with the two drovers who had been arguing since Thursday over a deck of cards.

They were playing for a mule. The older one, Joss, had a thin bent nose and a voice like a gate, and he slapped down the king of hearts each time as if it were a gift. The younger, Teodor, only ever won with the queens. They had inked a tiny crown on the back of every card so nobody could swap in a fresh deck, and every hand ended with the same complaint: that the other had cheated with a crown.

Near midnight the stove sulked and I pulled the letter from my coat to warm it. The seal was already broken. Inside was a single line in my own handwriting, dated twelve years before, promising I would come back over the pass once the mule was paid off. I had forgotten writing it. Joss read it over my shoulder and laughed until he coughed.

In the morning they had settled it. The mule went to whichever of them the letter had cost more, and the cards went into the stove. Teodor kept one queen, the edge charred to lace, and tucked it into his shirt. I took the salt down the far side and never learned whose crown had won.
