The paint would not flow in the cold, so Ada Crewe kept the pot inside her coat against her ribs while she worked the ladder at Lowther Bank. Walter Greave had asked for the words across the top of the barn door before the lambing, and she had told him the enamel would crack if the frost got under it. He said the frost could wait. It was January and the yard was a sheet of iron, and every breath she let out hung in front of the letters like a second, smaller sign.

She began with the cross because the old board had one, a little thing set before the first word that Walter's father had insisted on. Then she ran the F down and out, looping its tail into the H, and the wind came round the corner and pushed the brush sideways. She had to stop, wipe, and start again. Walter held the ladder with both hands and said nothing for an hour, which she took as praise. When she reached the ampersand she thought of her mother writing it on every envelope, quick and leaning, as if the hand could not wait for the rest of the word.

The heart was last. Walter asked for it small, the size of a thumbprint, and she made it with one turn of the wrist. Afterwards he stood in the snow reading it and said the ewes in the low field would be dropping lambs by the week's end, and he had not slept properly since November. Faith to get up, he said, hope the wet ones stand, and love for the rest of it. Ada wiped the brush on her apron and said that was three words for a very long winter. He laughed, the first time all week, and the paint on the door was dry by dusk.
