Silhouette figures and triangle symbol on forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The design shows three solid black silhouetted figures on a ground line, two standing in a confrontational pose and one smaller figure between them. Wispy, broken black ink and soft grey smoke trail to the right, ending in a triangle with a circle and a vertical line, with a small piece of script beside it. The work uses bold solid black shapes with fine broken edges and grey shading, all in black ink against the skin.

You reach the Gap at dusk with the wind dragging peat smoke sideways off the fires below, and Aldous is already waiting by the three-stone cairn, his staff planted like a surveyor's pole. He does not greet you. He never has. Two summers ago he took the toll from your father and kept it, and the valley has been saying your name ever since, as if a debt could be inherited along with a flock.

He tells you to walk the line, and points with the staff at the scree where the old road drops into cloud. Nobody crosses it after dark. You lift your own staff anyway. Behind him the moon clears the ridge, pale as a coin, and cloud slides across it in black threads that snap apart before they reach the ground. The wind has its teeth in your collar. His stance is wide and patient, the same stance he wore at the sheep fair when he bought the weakest ewe for a penny just to spite you.
The first blow is not a blow. It is a crack of frost under your boot, then a sound like a bell struck underwater, and the ring of unnamed stones on the crest begins to hum. Aldous turns his head towards it. In that moment you step between him and the cairn, and the three stones seem to draw together into a single point, the way the lines of a sight converge on a far summit.
When the mist thins there is nothing on the path but grey smoke rolling east into the next valley, and a flat stone at your feet with words scratched into it: keep the gap, not the grudge. You pick it up. It is still warm from his hand.
