The heron has given up on the pond again, so I have been sitting by the water instead, watching the wind push the surface into little blue hills. You would laugh. Your father spent a whole summer trying to get that spout to work, and it only ever spat when the rain came in sideways.
The storm on Tuesday finally made it sing. Water came off the roof gutter, struck the lead dragon's open jaw, and ran down its silver back in a rush that washed the moss from every scale. Mrs Okafor from number nine came out in her dressing gown to see what the racket was. She said the thing looked as if it was swimming upstream. I told her it had been waiting thirty years to do exactly that.
Yesterday I found two orange flakes of old paint caught in the crease beneath its jaw, the same colour as the marigolds your mother planted by the gate. I have left them there. I thought about scrubbing the spout clean for Sunday's tea, but the garden seems to like it better as it is, wild and dripping and a little bit furious.
Come up at the weekend. Bring the boots with the holes in them. The dragon has been asking after you, and so have I.
