The chain had rusted at the ninth link, so Ada Pell counted the rest by hand, and the reeds let her through as if they had been told to expect her. Behind her the two parishes were already quarrelling over the strip of fen between them, Hollow Ash claiming it for the mill and Sedge End claiming it for the eels. The magistrate had sent her with a plumb line, a theodolite she could barely lift, and one instruction: run it true from the old oak to the sluice, and let the ground argue with the line, not the other way round.

By the third day her shoulders ached and the string kept snagging on herons' nests. She tied it off at every stake, dropped the bob, and waited for it to stop swinging. Men from both villages came down to watch. They brought bread and opinions. A boy from Sedge End asked whether the line would stop at the water or go on under it, and she told him a true line goes wherever the weight pulls it, which is down, which is the only honest direction there is.

On the fourth morning the bob hung dead still above a flat stone with a cross cut into it, and the string ran up through the grass to a point she could not have chosen herself. The boy had been right. The line went under, and the mill men stopped talking.

She wrote the bearing in her book under the date, and because nobody else was there to see it, she pressed the stake into the mud and felt the cold water rise to meet it.
