Fine line circle and line tattoo on shoulder and back
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A shirtless man stands with his head bowed to one side, showing his back and shoulder in a black and white photograph. A thin black outline of a circle sits over the shoulder and upper arm, and a single long line runs from the shoulder down the back. The linework is crisp and minimal, with no shading, and the plain white background keeps the focus on the ink.

Harriet Quayle had been dropping the plumb line from the top of the gatehouse for three days, and the weight kept swinging back to the same stone. Outside the ruin of Carrick Hollow the wind came off the moor with nothing in its way, and her boots were full of grit from the bailey.

Her father had drawn the castle as a circle, the curtain wall rolling round the yard like a hoop. The round tower at the north corner was the only part still standing to its full height, and the only part the county had never bothered to fence. She had come to measure it before the council sold the stone for a farm wall, and so far she had measured nothing but her own impatience.
On the fourth morning she found what she had been looking for. A line had been cut into the mortar, straight as a rule, running from the tower's footing up to a ring carved at the height of a man's shoulder. Someone had scored the circle with a nail and then drawn one groove down from it, the way a father marks how tall a child has grown against a kitchen door.
She sat on the cold lintel with her pencil above the page for a long time. Then she drew the ring, and beside it the line, and wrote beneath them the only figure that mattered: the distance from the ring to the ground, which was exactly the length of her father's arm. She rolled the plumb line up, tucked the notebook inside her coat, and left the stone standing.
