Wave linework across back and arm
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A shirtless man is photographed from behind, with his head and face out of frame, and one arm extended to the left. Repeated fine black lines form layered, ribbon-like wave shapes that cross the shoulder blade, the top of the back and the upper arm. The greyscale photograph is taken from above against a plain tiled floor, with the linework clearly visible across the skin.

The ruling pen had clogged again, so Nell Harrow spat on the nib, wiped it on her apron and tried once more across the tide table. The harbour master wanted the swell recorded every hour from the breakwater, not guessed at from the pub window, and he wanted it in lines. Each wave was a single curve drawn with a set square, then another inside it, until the paper held a ribbon of ink that rose and fell like something breathing. Her father had taught her that the sea only ever repeats itself if you look at it long enough.

On the Tuesday after the gale the lines would not sit still. She drew the ninth curve and it swung wide to the left, crossing the margin as though reaching for the empty chair by the stove. She told herself the pen had skipped. She drew the tenth and it bent back on itself, folding over the first like a sheet being shaken out to dry. By dusk the page held a shape she could not have measured: a ribbon of thirty fine lines, layered and swelling over the edge of the paper.
Lamps were lit along the quay when Tom's boat came in, two hours late and without Tom. The harbour master read her sheet at the counter, traced the biggest wave with his thumb, and said nothing for a long while. Then he pinned it to the wall beside the others, where the sea had always been kept in order, and told her to go home and rest.
She did not go home. She stood at the breakwater with the sheet folded inside her coat and watched the real water come in, line after line, and for the first time she could not tell which one was the sea and which one was hers.
