Sisters script lettering with a key
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the word sisters in flowing cursive script, with the letters outlined in black and shaded with grey gradients. Below the lettering is a large ornate key, drawn with bold outlines and soft grey shading to suggest form and highlights. The design sits on bare skin and is photographed close up and slightly angled, with the lettering filling most of the frame.

The snow had shut the pass for nine days when Ada finally asked Marta about the key. It hung on a nail behind the bar, iron as long as a forearm, its bow worked into a knot of leaves. Marta had always said it belonged to the cellar and the cellar belonged to winter, and that was the end of it.

On the tenth morning the flour ran low and the two travellers in the back room began to cough. Ada took the key down while Marta was seeing to the fire. The cellar door stuck, then gave, and behind it the cold smelled of apples and wet stone. There were no barrels. There was a chest, and in the chest, wrapped in oilcloth, a child's coat, two wooden spoons carved with the same leaf, and a letter in their mother's hand that began, 'For my girls, who will argue about this.'
Marta came down the steps with the lamp and stopped. Neither of them said anything for a while. The letter said the inn had been bought for them, not for the road, and that the cellar was for keeping what could not be replaced. Ada read it twice, then folded it along its old creases.
They carried the flour up together, one sack each, and the travellers ate bread and drank the last of the cider by the fire. When the storm eased, Marta hung the key back on its nail, but she left the cellar door unlatched, and in the morning Ada found the chest open and both spoons laid out on the table, one for each of them.
