Infinity symbol with script names on foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black infinity symbol tattoo on the top of a foot, with three handwritten script names set within its loops. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The foot fills most of the frame on a grey, reflective surface, with the tattoo placed diagonally across it.

Sit yourself down by the range, because this one takes the whole kettle. You want to know how a loop of ink ends up holding three names, and I'll tell you, though my mother never believed a word of it. Back in 1953, in Hollin Bridge, there was a schoolmistress called Miss Pargeter who taught the children their joined-up hand with a steel nib and a bottle of blue ink that froze in the outhouse every January.

She had three pupils that winter who would not stop passing notes. Noah Dyer, Emmy Clough and little Sadie Frost sat in a row by the window and wrote to one another across the aisle in curls and tails so tight the teacher could not read a word. Miss Pargeter confiscated the lot and found, underneath, a single sheet where all three had tried to write their names in one unbroken line. It never closed. Every time they reached the end of Sadie's name the pen came back round to Noah's, and round again, so the line made a figure of eight lying on its side.

She kept that sheet in her drawer for thirty years. When she retired she gave it to the children of the house where I lodged, and said, "Infinity is only a curly name that refuses to stop." I thought it foolish then. Now I think she was simply a woman who knew when three people had been friends long enough to need one shape to hold them.
