Sitting cat with The cat did it text on a wrist
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo sits on the back of a wrist, showing a simple outline drawing of a sitting cat with a curled tail. The words The cat did it are written in a handwritten style beside the cat, with a short arrow pointing towards it. The linework is thin and even, the photograph is black and white, and the subject is placed centrally against a knitted jumper.

Dear Maureen,

The fridge door is off its hinges, the lamp is in the plunge pool, and the cat did it. I am writing that down on the notepad by the bed so I remember to say it to the man at reception, who has already looked at me the way people look at a woman who has been alone on a desert road for three days.
The cat came with the room. Nobody at the Tamarisk Motel would say whose he was, and he has never once asked. He is grey, one ear folded like a dog-eared page, and he sits on the sill of room nine watching the trucks go by as if he is the one who signs for them. Since Tuesday he has taken my spare key, rolled the tyre iron under the bed, and stolen a whole packet of ham from the cooler. Each time I catch him he only blinks and curls his tail round his feet like he has nothing to answer for.
So I started a list. Fridge. Lamp. Key. Ham. Every line ends with a little arrow pointing at the cat. Last night I went back through the notepad and found, in my own handwriting, the page where I'd written the grocery order for the morning, with the lamp's broken shade crossed out beside it. I had knocked it over myself, reaching for the kettle, and I had written the cat's name on the list before I had even looked up.
I haven't told the man at reception yet. The cat is on the sill now, tail round his paws, watching the road. I have decided to let him keep the ham. Some things a body has to own, and some things are simply easier to blame on someone who will never be asked.
Love, Jo
