Black paw print tattoo on the wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black paw print sits on the inner wrist, with a main pad below and four toe pads above, their edges softly broken and speckled. The hand is clenched towards the camera, with red and green nail polish, and the skin is pale with soft natural light. A cream, fluffy dog is out of focus on the right, and the background is an indoor room.

Four toes, a heel like a dropped stone, and the edges broken where the cold had crumbled the surface.

Nobody on the plot would own to it. Dorothy at number nine said the dog was kennelled at home with a bad hip, and Ray swore blind he'd been in his shed with the door shut. I knelt on a folded sack and followed the prints down the path, where they went small and neat, then wide and muddy, then stopped dead at the gate, as if whatever made them had simply lifted off into the hedge.

I sat on the bench with my flask and thought about how a paw leaves more than a shape. It leaves a pressure, a hurry, a decision. That one had turned round twice before it ran. Someone had also been careful with the gate latch, which was a thing no dog has ever managed.

By the afternoon the sun had melted the frost and the prints had softened at their edges, the way all footprints do in soft ground. I left the bed as it was. Come spring, the leeks went in around the marks, and I never did learn who had come calling in the night, only that somebody had.
