Skeleton cat with rose and butterfly
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
A black silhouetted skeleton cat sits upright, one paw raised towards a small blue butterfly. A red and gold rose and sprigs of green leaves fill the left and right sides of the composition. The cat has bold outlines and white bone details, with flat red, yellow, blue and green accents against a plain beige background.

Mind the windfalls and sit where the wasps can't get at your jam. This is the tale of Marrow, the black cat who kept the Hallows orchard at Stoke Wenning, and who had been dead eleven summers before anybody thought to tell him so.

In the dusk his ribs showed through his coat, white as pear blossom, and he still walked the rows each evening with his tail curled up like a question mark. He wanted nothing from the living except the butterflies that drank from the split plums. One blue one, small, with a torn wing, he was forever reaching for, and never once caught, because that butterfly knew better than to settle on a thing with no warmth in it.
The rose by the gate had been planted by Ada Fenn over her husband's grave. It bloomed red at the petals and gold at the heart, the way she said his temper had been. Leaves came up through the cracks in the wall, green and sharp-toothed, and when the wasps got into the cider barrel, Marrow sat on the wall and watched them with one paw lifted, polite as a bishop at a christening.
One September the blue butterfly came down at last and settled on the raised paw. Ada came out with her shears, saw the two of them there, and put the shears back in the shed. She left the rose unpruned that year, and the butterfly stayed on that bony paw until the first frost, and neither of them moved an inch.
