Swallow and heart flash design
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A coloured drawing of a swallow flying to the right, with teal wings edged in yellow, a pink-shaded belly and a small blue eye. A thin black line curls from its beak to a red heart, and black four-point stars and dots fill the cream background. The bold black outlines and flat, saturated colour are typical of traditional tattoo flash.

The swallow came in through the taproom window the night the lane shut for good, shaking snow off its blue back and landing on the rim of my cold bowl of stew as if it had booked a room. My father always said swallows that stay past September are either sick or sentimental, and this one looked far too pleased with itself to be ill.

Nobody else was stranded at the Hollin Gate that week except a surveyor called Mr Abney, who had come up to measure the bridge and now measured our biscuit tin instead. He was the one who saw the thread first: a fine black line trailing from the bird's beak, which he swore was a stray fishing line until it tugged the bird sideways and a small red heart came bumping across the flagstones after it, like a dog on a lead. Abney laughed until he had to sit down. I did not laugh. I had seen that heart before, painted on the inside of the wardrobe door in the room above the stairs, where my mother kept the letters she never sent to the coachman.
The bird went up the stairs ahead of us, stopping on each landing to wait, and at the wardrobe it turned and hung in the air with its tail fanned like a pair of open scissors. Inside, under a folded shawl, was a bundle tied with the same black thread. Twenty-two letters, all unopened, all addressed to a man who had driven his cart into the river the winter I was born.
In the morning the plough came through and the road was open. I found the swallow on the windowsill, its thread wound twice round a fingertip of the sign, and I cut the bundle loose and gave the letters to the fire. The bird watched them burn, then rose out over the white fields, heading south, and left the little red heart behind on the sill for me to keep.
