Zentangle-style cat line drawing

Black and grey · Flash

A seated cat in profile is drawn in black ink on cream paper, with its tail curling up the right side. The body is filled with repeating patterns: leaf shapes in the chest, daisy-like flowers and stippled dots at the base, and a braided pattern along the tail. The linework is even and dense, with no shading beyond dotted and hatched fills, and the composition sits centrally on the page.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had filled the margins of her grandfather's ferry ledger with patterns since the summer the ferry stopped running, and by October the cat was the only thing on the page she was happy with. She gave it leaves for a chest and a braid for a tail, then daisies along the bottom where the paper curled. Her grandfather, who could not sleep, found the page at two in the morning and said nothing about the ledger being ruined. He only asked whether the cat had a name.

"Not yet," Nell said. "It needs one that fits all the dots."

Over the next week the cat acquired a name, Marrow, and a habit. Each night, when the kitchen clock struck twelve, Nell heard a small tick of ink from the table, like a pen testing its nib. In the morning the daisies at the base had grown a little larger, and one stippled petal had moved to the windowsill, where the frost had been drawn over in dots.

On the last night of the month a bell rang across the water, though no boat had crossed in years. Nell went down in her slippers and found the ledger open on the stairs, the cat gone from the page. Its paw prints led out of the front door in a neat trail of black dots, past the gate and down to the empty slipway, where the tail braid lay coiled on the wet stone like a rope someone had forgotten to tie.
