Skeleton hand making rock horns sign

Black and grey · Flash

A line drawing of a skeletal hand with the index and little fingers extended and the middle and ring fingers folded, forming the rock horns gesture. The bones are outlined in dark, fairly even strokes with small shading marks along the joints and knuckles. The design is in black on white and sits centrally on the page with plenty of empty space around it.

Dear Ruth, Don't tell Mum I'm writing from the Gaiety. She thinks I've packed in the sound desk, and I haven't. Tuesday we had eleven in the house and the promoter wanted the cable money back. So I stood at the back of the stalls with my hand up, two fingers out and the rest folded down like a bad poker hand, and waited until Vic looked round from the drum riser. Last number, that means. Or it means get off, depending how hard you lean into it. He leaned into it.

The hall smells of wet coats and the fried onion from the cafe downstairs. Mr Pardoe still bolts the stage door at eleven and counts the spare bulbs into a biscuit tin, though there's nothing left to light but the exit signs. Last month he showed me the old wardrobe ledger, every sequined costume the Wonder Troupe ever wore, each one signed out and never signed back in. Nobody returned a thing. He says that's how you know a show's finished: the props stop coming home.

Vic packed his kit in the dark while I swept. On the dressing room mirror, somebody years back had drawn that same hand in greasepaint, all bone, the two horns standing up like a question. I wiped at it with my sleeve and it wouldn't come off, so I've left it. When the bailiffs come for the mirror they'll have to take the signal along with it, and I doubt they'll know what it means.
