Hand outline tattoo on palm
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows an open palm facing the camera, with a bold black outline of a hand gesture drawn across the skin. The linework is simple and even, and the fingers of the tattooed hand are curled into the outline. The image is monochrome, with a plain pale background and a silver ring visible on the raised hand.

Nell had the night shift on the Ruddock Street pier because nobody else would stand out in the wind past midnight. Her job was to watch the far end of the basin where the last ferry came in from the island, and to raise a hand when she saw its lamps. The crews could not hear a horn over the generators at the fish market, so for thirty years the harbour had talked in hands. A flat palm meant hold off. A fist meant come in slow. The sign everyone trusted was the loose one, thumb out and little finger out, the other three folded down, which meant all well and the way is clear.

Her grandfather had taught her the signs on the back steps of the chandlery, chalking them on the lintel so she could copy the angle. He had also taught her that the signs only worked if you kept them the same every night. A hand that changed its shape got people hurt on the slipway.
On the last night of the autumn timetable the lamps came round the breakwater late, and they were not steady. Nell stood at the rail with her palm out and waited. The boat slowed, drifted, then swung its lights the way it did when someone in the wheelhouse had seen her and was answering. She kept her signal still until the bow touched the fenders. Only then did she close her fingers and push her hand into her coat pocket, where the cold had got into her knuckles.
The skipper climbed the ladder and asked what she had been doing out there with her arm up for an hour. She told him the sea was flat, the way was clear, and he should go home to his dinner.
