Skeleton pin-up with We Can Do It banner
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A skeleton in a polka dot headscarf and a collared shirt poses with one arm raised and flexed, echoing the Rosie the Riveter pose. Fine linework and grey shading define the skull, bones and fabric, and a scroll banner along the bottom reads We Can Do It. The drawing is monochrome and fills the frame with the figure set against a plain background.

Dear Nell,

The snow has sealed the Coldharbour road since Tuesday, so the coach won't come and neither will the new girl from Leeds. Mr Pargeter has put me on the kitchen and the bar both, which means I am the only one here who can tell the barley from the bran in the morning porridge. I tell you this so you know I am managing, though I expect you will read it and think otherwise.
The guests are three: a surveyor from the water board who snores through the wall, a widow who plays patience in the snug and cheats at it, and a boy from the signal box who came in with frost in his eyebrows and has not yet taken off his gloves. I have given him the good chair by the grate. Last night he asked why we keep the old rivet gun on the mantel. I told him it was for knocking the draught out of the door, which is a lie, but a kinder one than the truth, which is that Father carried it home from the shipyard in '43 and never once put it down.
Your letter about the riveting shop came on Friday. You wrote that the forewoman calls you Bones because you never stop moving and never stop grinning, and I laughed out loud at the bar. Keep the spotted scarf knotted tight. Don't let your belt catch your sleeve on the lathe, and don't let the banner ladies tell you the work is a man's job, because you have been doing it since March.
The road should be clear by Thursday. When it is, I will walk down to the depot with Father's gun wrapped in a sack and hand it through the gate for you. Tell them we can do it. I think we already have.
