Skull and clock face on an arm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A greyscale skull sits in front of a clock face with Roman numerals and ornate hands-style markings, with a masked figure at the top edge and a pink rose partly visible at the bottom. The skull and mask are rendered with soft, smooth shading and fine tonal gradation, while the numerals are bold solid black. The rose is the only area of colour, and the tight crop places the design across the limb.

Mind the step, love, that's the one that rocks. Your grandfather set it there the summer the clock stopped, and I never had the heart to lift it. Now hand me the trowel and hold the lamp steady.

The clock was his father's, a brass-faced thing with Roman numerals that hung in the hall of the old rectory until the damp got into its works. Every hour it lost a minute, and by the time Harold carried it out to the garden it was running a whole afternoon behind the sun. He buried it face up beneath the pink rose by the wall, said the ground would keep the hours honest. Silly man. The rose bloomed twice as hard after that, its roots wrapping the case like fingers around a teacup.

People came asking about it. The vicar wanted to know if it was a sundial. A boy from the village swore he saw a grey face grinning up through the soil on frosty mornings, and we all laughed, though I stopped planting bulbs over that corner all the same.

So when the rose went black last winter I dug down, and there it was, the hands frozen at twenty past six, and pressed against the glass a pale shape like a skull, as if it had been listening to us all these years. I filled the hole in again. Some things are better kept in the dark, where nobody can count them.
