Skull and peony on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large skull sits above a full peony bloom on the forearm, with the flower petals spreading down towards the wrist. The skull is rendered with soft grey shading and fine stippled texture, while the petals use bold black shadows and open linework. The image is tightly framed on the arm against a pale, plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every spring the peonies came up through the far wall of Hollin churchyard, and every spring my father cut the best of them for the market and left the rest for the bees. The skull lay under the largest bush, half out of the soil, grinning at the lych gate as if it had been waiting for someone to ask its name.

Nobody knew whose it was. The vicar said the squire, who had promised the parish a garden and kept only the wall. Father said it was a miller's boy who fell in the mill race. What we did know was that the flowers grew thickest over it, their heads heavy and dark as a bruise, and that nothing else in the yard would bloom so close to it.

The stranger came in October, when the petals were long gone, and offered my father five shillings for the skull and a shovel's worth of soil. Father shook his head. The man offered ten. I took the spade out of his hand and told him the skull had a bush to keep it company, and a bush could not be bought off a wall. He laughed, but he came back the next spring for a root, and he took it to a town where the land was all chalk and nobody remembered the squire.

By midsummer the peony had flowered three times, and every bloom was hung with black at the edges. He sent a boy with a cart. The skull came back in a sack, and I laid it down in the same hollow, and the roots went after it, spreading down the wall towards the trough as if they had been waiting all year to reach the water.
