Skull and pineapple on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A skull forms the base of the design, with a pineapple's spiky leaves rising from its crown. The skull is shaded in grey with bold outlines, and the leaves use hatched linework to show texture. The design is in black and grey ink and fills the vertical frame against a plain light background.

By half three the lorries have finished grinding up the ramp and the market floor smells of bruised mango and diesel. You are checking pallet labels under a sodium lamp when the crate from Tema stops you, because its docket says twelve pineapples and there are thirteen. The extra one sits wedged at the back, cold as a river stone, its crown of leaves stiff and grey-green under the light.

Nobody on the night crew wants to claim it. Dez says the grower always sends a spare for luck. Marguerite from the banana stall says thirteen of anything is a bad sign and you should bin it. You turn it over in your hands. The skin is ridged like cobbles, but when you tip it toward the lamp the dark marks on its base are not bruises. It is a face, hollow-eyed and grinning, as though someone had drawn the bones of a skull into the fruit with a fine nib and then let the leaves grow out of its crown.
You should bin it. Instead you carry it to the weighing bay and set it on the scale. The needle swings, settles, and the readout blinks a figure that makes no sense for a fruit that size. Then the strip light overhead gutters out, and in the dark you could swear the leaves lift a little, the way hair stirs in a draught.
When the lights come back the crate is empty and the thirteenth pineapple sits on the bay with its crown turned towards the loading doors, as if it has somewhere to be. You pick up the manifest, write twelve in the box, and stand there a long moment with the pen hovering. Then you tuck the fruit under your arm and walk out into the grey dawn, where the first buses are already hissing at the kerb.
