Skull and roses on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic skull sits at the centre of the design, with a pale rose at its upper right and a larger rose below its jaw. A thorny vine wraps across the skull, and a teardrop eye with radiating spikes sits above it, framed by a dotted arc. The shading is smooth and detailed, moving from deep blacks to soft greys, with highlights on the bone and petals.

Dear Tomas,

The roses along the lane have gone to hips now, and Mother has stopped asking when you will write. I am writing instead, though I do not know where to send it. Mrs Pryce says a letter goes wherever the heart points it, which is the sort of thing she says when the post office has shut for the winter.

Something happened at the edge of the wood on Tuesday. The old keeper, Amos Venn, came down the path with his dog and a skull wrapped in sacking. He had found it under the beech roots where the ground slumps after rain. He wanted the parish to bury it properly, and he asked me to mend the scraps of grey wool bonnet lying beside it, gone to moth. Thorns had grown right through the weave, and he laughed when I pulled them out and said the forest was not finished with that bonnet yet.

I kept the skull on my windowsill that night. Three hips had rolled into the crack of the sill, and the moon sat in the glass like an eye with its lashes spread. I thought of you out on the water where the fog never lifts, and I did not sleep much.

On Thursday Amos came back, and he would not take the skull with him. He said it had been waiting for someone to notice it. We buried it beneath the roses by the churchyard wall and tucked the thorned stems around it like a blanket. Come home when the hips are red. Bring the compass you promised Father.

Yours, Nell
