Mags had the brush in her teeth when the Dorothy Ann came round the breakwater, low in the water and listing a little to port, and she spat it into her palm before the wind could take it. The boat was named for a dead aunt, and nobody on the quay had ever said a word against the name. The hull needed a coat of something. She had a tin of black gloss, a jar of cheap pink enamel someone had left in the chandlery, and a sponge.

Her father had painted boats for forty years and said the trick was to stop before you thought the job was finished. So she dabbed the black where the old skull had flaked away from the bow and let it bleed down toward the waterline the way the salt had eaten it. Then she flicked pink across the top, like the cherry trees her mother had planted by the fish market, which had come down in a February gale and never been replaced.

Skipper Tenney came up the slip with his hands in his oilskin pockets and studied it for a long time. "Your father would have made it neater," he said. "He'd have made it smaller."

"He'd have done it in one coat."

Tenney laughed, a short bark, and then didn't. The nets had come up empty for three weeks, and out past the Mouse Rock the gulls were following nothing at all. "Her name's on the transom," he said. "Leave the skull where it is."

She wiped her hands on a rag. The splatter was still wet, running in long dark threads toward the keel, and the petals already looked as if they were drifting off the hull and into the harbour.
