You will laugh, but I still knot the red bandana every morning before I go among the trees. The children on the lane think it is a costume. Let them. The old captain never let a loose cloth near a rope, and I suppose I have kept the habit the way other women keep a recipe. The patch hangs on the nail by the back door now, the one with the brass studs you pressed into it the winter we sheltered in Falmouth. Most of the studs have worn dull, and the leather has gone soft as a glove.

Yesterday a windfall split open under my boot and there was one of them, sitting in the flesh of the apple like a seed that had decided to grow silver. I thought about tossing it into the cider press, then thought better of it. I wiped it on my apron and put it in the tin with the broken compass. I expect you will want it back when you come up for the harvest supper, and I expect you will say it was never worth a fight. You were always wrong about that.

Come on Saturday. The fruit will still be on the trees, and I will keep the good cider under the stairs, the one that tastes of smoke and bad decisions.
