Skull and roses across the upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows a woman's back with dark hair falling over one shoulder, her face turned away from the camera. A large skull sits across the upper back, framed by shaded roses on the shoulder and upper arm. The work is rendered in black and grey with soft shading and fine detail, set against a plain light background.

His daughter, Marjorie Fell, knew better. She had a stub of charcoal and a habit of drawing whatever the wind showed her in the cracked glass of the empty rectory. One wet March she drew a skull on the vestry door, and roses curled round it on every side, as though they were keeping it warm. Her father scrubbed at it with lye, and the rain came on and sat in every line, so the drawing only grew darker by dusk.
The parish came to look, the way folk come to a gibbet or a fire. Then they came back with their own dead, asking her to draw a face they couldn't keep in their heads. She charged a penny and a rose cutting, and she never once drew the same thing twice, so the door filled up and nobody went home without something to carry.
Mind your change, now. That penny's still warm from the last hand that paid for a flower, and the stallholder on your left has been holding a lily since the bell went for noon.
