The brass rosette on the cabin doors had worked loose by the third lock, so you spent the frost-stiff morning on your knees at Brensham with a screwdriver between your teeth while Aunt Dot shouted that the ice was already lacing the tiller. The boat was called Halcyon Mercy, and her bow carried a pair of painted pinions that flaked a little more every winter, as if they were trying to leave the wood.

Dot said the rosette was the compass the first owner nailed up, a ring of eight petals meaning home from any bearing. A man in a good coat had once offered to buy the doors for the carving alone. She sent him back down the towpath with his hands empty and a warning about bargains that come too neatly packaged.
After noon the ice gave under you near the weir, and the black water took you to the thigh before you could think. The wings on the bow seemed to lift as you grabbed for the gunwale, and Dot threw the rope with a curse that sounded almost like a prayer. You hauled yourself aboard, shaking, and she didn't say a word about it.
That night you oiled the brass by lamplight and counted the petals again, eight, the way she had taught you. The wings on the bow had never been there to carry the boat anywhere. They were there to keep the rosette level when the river tried to tip it over.
