Skull and playing cards on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a skull with one visible eye, partly emerging from torn dark shadow, with bony fingers holding a fan of playing cards at the lower edge. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft greys and strong contrast on the skull and cards. The design fills the frame on a close view of the upper arm against a plain pale background.

The bulb above the card table has been buzzing since the last waltzer stopped, and the man opposite you has given up pretending to count his coins. You know the look. Forty years on the midway at Sutton Fold has taught you that a losing hand makes most men polite and a few of them dangerous. This one keeps tapping the ace of spades with a fingernail, as though it might tell him where his luck went.

Dolly Renshaw, who runs the candy floss stall and has never once lost at anything, leans on the tent pole and watches you deal. She says the skull on the ace is painted, not printed, and that the paint is older than the fair. You don't argue. The cards were your father's, and his father's before that, stiff with age, their corners softened by a hundred nights of change. Shuffle, cut, deal. The man pushes his last pound coin forward and the tent goes quiet enough to hear the generator.
He turns over his hand and it is a pair of sevens, nothing more. He laughs, a little wet, and reaches for the coin, but you have already slid the ace from the bottom of the deck into your palm, the way your father taught you. You are not sure whether you are cheating him or saving him from himself. The skull on the card seems to grin at you. Dolly sees it too and says nothing.
When he has gone, out past the dodgems into the dark, you fold the deck and set it on the table with the ace face up. Tomorrow the fair moves on to Hebden. The generator coughs. You slide the card back into the middle of the pack, where it belongs, and wonder which of you the skull was counting.
