Skull, butterfly and rose with rosary
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large skull sits at the centre of the design, with a monarch butterfly resting on its crown and a shaded rose below the jaw. A beaded rosary wraps around the skull and rose, ending in a cross at the bottom. The work uses smooth grey shading and fine highlights on a dark background, with soft gradients giving the skull and petals depth.

4.10 a.m. Flour on the windowsill again, and the ovens are ticking up to heat. Mam's rosary is still hooked over the handle of the bread peel where she left it in March, and I haven't had the heart to move it. Ruth from the chapel says I should. Ruth from the chapel has never had to scrape a tray of burnt tins at this hour.

Last night a monarch came in through the back door, drawn by the sugar on the cooling racks. I found it at half three sitting on the old tin skull mould Dad used for the Day of the Dead buns, its wings opening and shutting slow as a hand. I didn't shoo it. Mam would have called it a soul come home for its tea, then made me sweep the floor twice.
So I'm making her orange loaf this morning, the one with too much honey, the one nobody else on Hollin Street could get right. I knead it on the marble until my forearms burn, shape it, and lay it in the tin beside the skull mould, which I've scrubbed clean. The rosary slides off the peel and clacks on the tiles. I leave it where it falls.
The first delivery van idles outside at ten to six. When I open the door to load the trays, the butterfly lifts off the mould, circles the lamp once, and goes out into the grey as if it was only ever passing through. The loaf goes in the window to prove. Somebody will buy it before noon, and nobody will ask why it tastes of her.
