Stacked roses and skull on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A stacked forearm design shows a rose at the top, a human skull in the middle and a second rose at the bottom, with small droplet-like highlights on the petals. The rendering uses smooth, detailed shading with strong contrast between light and dark greys. The tattoo fills the vertical frame against a plain black background.

The skull turns up in the second week of frost, when the spade on the chalk terrace goes through the loam and strikes something that rings rather than thuds. You kneel in the mud with your sleeves pushed up and brush it clean with your thumb. Nobody on Sallow Island has buried anyone in the rose garden since your grandmother's time, and she never said a word about it.

The garden is the only thing the wind cannot take. Your grandmother built its walls from the grey stone of the old quarry and planted two rows of damask roses along the south face, their blooms so heavy in June that the stems bowed like wet rope. Every morning that summer the petals held a bead of dew at the rim, and the light caught each drop as though someone had stuck a pin through it. You used to count them before breakfast. Forty-one on the left bed, thirty-three on the right, until the day the count stopped being the same twice.
You carry the skull up to the kitchen in a tea towel and set it on the windowsill beside the salt jar. The ferry is due Thursday, and the parish priest will want it logged, but first you sit with it while the kettle cools. The socket facing you is smooth and dark. The bone has taken on the colour of old candle wax, and in the grey light it looks less like a death than a promise kept late.
On Thursday the ferry comes in low through the fog, and you hand the tea towel to the constable without unwrapping it. Afterwards you walk back to the garden. The roses have dropped their heads with the first hard frost, and every petal on the ground is holding a bead of water, perfectly round and perfectly still, waiting for someone to look.
