Skull-faced and stitched doll figures on a calf
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a skull-faced figure with a long-haired companion whose body has visible stitching, seated together on a chair with a long dark drape falling below them. The work is in black and grey, with bold outlines, smooth shading and fine hatching on the hair and clothing. The design fills the vertical length of the limb, with the figures at the top and the chair base and drape running down toward the ankle.

Snow had sealed the pass for nine days when the widow Marren came down the stairs of the Hollin Inn with her mending basket and found the bone-faced stranger already sitting in the high-backed chair by the hearth, as though the chair had been waiting for him.

He was thin as a rake handle, his skull bare and yellowed at the brow, and he held his hands in his lap the way a man holds his hat at a graveside. Beside him on a three-legged stool sat a woman made of grey linen and thread, her seams showing at the wrists and throat. Marren had sewn those seams herself years back, for her daughter, who went out one March morning to fetch water from the beck and never came home. Marren had never told anyone the rag doll went missing too.
The stranger asked for a length of black wool to lay over the chair back, and she fetched the good cloth from the press without a word. He asked that the stitches at the doll's shoulder be taken out and sewn again, and she did it by the tallow candle, her needle going in and out of the linen while he watched her hands. He did not speak, and she found she did not mind the quiet.
When the thaw came and the road opened, the chair was empty. The black wool lay folded on the bench, and along its hem ran one neat line of red thread, stitched in a small careful hand that Marren knew, though she had not seen it since the girl was six.
