Skull-faced drum major on the side

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A skull-faced figure in a plumed shako and military-style tunic kicks one leg high and holds a sabre by its hilt. The design uses smooth, layered shading with bright highlights on the braiding and the metal, giving it a realistic, dimensional look. The figure fills most of the frame against plain, softly lit skin.

Mind the step, there's a loose board by the gate, and sit where the lamp can reach you. Now, you've all heard that Tobias Pell was the finest drum major in the county. What folk forget is that he wore his shako pulled low over a face like a bleached skull, and he had no shame about it. On the morning he married Winifred Shaw, the whole of Ashby Fold turned out to watch him lead the band up the hill.

The band was eleven strong that year, brass polished so bright the rooks swore at it from the elms. Tobias walked at the front with his sabre hilt in his fist, and at every crossroads he flung one leg up as high as a heron striking, and the crowd roared. Jasper Crane, the bride's uncle, had a wager running with the publican that the groom could not kick high enough to tap the church weathervane. Tobias heard it, of course. He heard everything. He winked at Jasper and gave his leg one long, considered lift.

The sabre went up, the plume shivered, and a rook dropped out of the elms and settled on the feathers as if it had been invited. The weathervane took a knock and spun round twice. Jasper paid the publican in silver that afternoon, though he swore the lamp had been in the way. Winifred laughed until she had to sit on the churchyard wall, and that is where Tobias found her, sabre laid across her lap like a christening gift.

So when you hear the drums at the next wedding, look up before you look at the bride. Somewhere above the lychgate there's a rook with a scrap of plume in its beak, waiting to see whether the groom has the nerve. Give him a cheer. Give him that much.
