Now the orchard at Hollins Farm ran brown and gold at the edges. Late August heat sat in the long grass, and the windfall fizzed with wasps under the trees. Nell walked the rows with a flask of cold tea and a knife in her apron, cutting away the tape from grafts that had taken. Each strip came away with a faint tug, like a thread drawn out of cloth, and she stacked them on the wall to dry in the sun.

Tobias's cousin came up from the village on Saturday to look at the land. He stood at the gate with his hat in his hands and talked about drainage and planning permission.
