Sugar skull with roses design
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A black and grey drawing of a sugar skull with ornate patterning on the forehead and diamond shapes in the eye sockets, set among two large roses and several leaves. The linework is bold and dark, with shading on the petals, leaves and skull creating depth. The design fills a tall, roughly vertical composition on a pale sheet, with a spiral notebook edge visible at the left.

The wasps had got into the windfalls again by the time Nan set the skull on the potting bench, and she swatted at them with a rolled copy of the Farmers Weekly without looking up. She was piping the sugar with a paper cone, her hands steady as a vet's, while I held the bowl of royal icing and tried not to breathe on it. Outside, the Discovery trees were dropping their last, and the grass under them had gone the colour of weak tea.

She said the dead liked a bit of colour, so she pressed two sugar diamonds into the eye sockets, cut from the silver paper of a Quality Street wrapper, and laid a rose on each side of the head. The roses were from the hedge by the gate, the wild one that had come up through the stile the year Grandad planted the last row of Bramleys. She'd cut them that morning with the grafting knife, and the petals still held the cold of the night.
When the icing had set, she wrote a name on the back of an old feed-merchant's ledger, the way she did every September, and I saw it was Grandad's. Under it she had listed every tree in the orchard, forty-one of them, with the year each one fruited first. The last line was blank.
She handed me the pen. I wrote the name of the little tree by the wall, the one that never gave us anything but leaves, and Nan nodded as if that was the right answer.
